Mortal Gods – Civilized Centaurs
Footsore Miniatures sent me one of the centaurs for Mortal Gods Mythic before and I was so excited about the model that I also requested the rest of the three civilized centaurs modeled by Trish Carden. The models, like the Zealots, come in a card-backed bag.
All centaurs come with an oval base made of MDF wood and equipment sprue, on which there is a quiver with a bow, a single quiver and two swords. The model itself consists of the horse part, the human torso and possibly an arm and a shield.
There are different versions of the origin of the centaurs in Greek mythology. The most common, however, is that the centaurs emerged from a liaison between the lusty Lapith king Ixion and a cloud in the shape of the goddess Hera. However, this is only true for the Wild Centaurs, who were later slain by Heracles. The most famous centaur is Cheiron. He was not descended from the Wild Centaurs of Ixion and was a respected mythical figure who is said to have educated and trained many of the greek heroes.
While the idea of Civilized Centaurs is probably not new, for me these are the first figures in this style. What stands out in contrast to the Zealots from the previous review is that the casting quality is noticeably better.
There were no incomplete cast areas on the model, which might not have been easy considering the massive horse body. What is nevertheless obvious are the clear mold lines, as well as the slightly bent base. Here I recommend you insert a pin through the wooden base and the base of the horse part, and then simply flood the gap with glue or close it with filler.
With the archer, I noticed that you could get quite great poses by rotating the upper body. Keen hobbyists could therefore think about magnetizing, for more cinematic photos in batreps.
I received the spearman and the leader later. These again had an even better casting quality than the archer before. Although there are also mold lines here, they were much less pronounced.
Overall, the models look good. The two different pairs of legs on the horse's body allow for either a very stoic stance, or a very dynamic one.
CONCLUSION
The individually available centaurs are really beautiful in terms of design. Especially the different positioning of the torsos I found to be an aesthetic bonus. The casting quality still has room for improvement, which is why I would currently still say that the models are more suitable for somewhat more experienced hobbyists who can handle it. In addition, at €17.50 per model, the Centaurs are at the somewhat more expensive end of the price scale. However, with them you already have half of an army of Zeus in terms of points ( based on the 500 point standard size in Mortal Gods Mythic).
For the spearman, I may replace the hand with spear with a plastic version for a little more breakage resistance. As for the painting, I will keep it in the same style as the archer and possibly create a step-by-step tutorial, although a tutorial for my greek hoplites already exists. I can't wait to use three centaurs at the same time - they are incredibly fast and the leader alone is already a force to be reckoned with on the field.
