Blood Bowl – Treeman

To bring a little more variety to my Old World Alliance team and not just have a "human team with dwarves", I promptly acquired a treeman last year.

As you can see, the package already comes in the new "sportier" design of the 2020 edition. As someone who has his roots in the print industry and understands the value of print products, I immediately noticed the print image on the flap when I opened it.

The model comes in two different versions, the Altern Forest Treeman, which can be found in Halfling teams, and the Loren Forest Treeman, which can be included in a Wood Elf roster.

In the package, due to the size of the model, there are two sprues, on which you can also find a squirrel that can either be glued on as a decoration, or meanwhile can also be played as the star player Akhorne.

It was noticeable that one of the sprues isn't flat, but makes a curve at the outer frame - that's why the two sprues are offset on top of each other. In addition, the model comes on a 40mm base, not on a 32mm base, which is common for Blood Bowl.

A bit of a fiddly job is assembling the hull, as you don't immediately recognize the tree man's "legs" at first glance - nice detail, in this case the feet are the roots, which are rooted in the ground and pulled out of the soil each step of the way.

What I found a bit annoying was the cup that was permanently embedded on the inside of the hull, which I cut out before assembling. After all, did every Old World tree man win a Blood Bowl tournament? Even one that has a trophy similar to the Blood Bowl trophy? I also cut off the elf-like creature in the branches without further ado.

Although I had the option of the helmet-looking attachment for the facial region, I decided not to use it in order to customize the look a bit more and fit into the Old World Alliances team look.

I also used shoulder armor from a human player's spare equipment as shoulder armor, and armor from ogre fists as thigh plates. This gives the possibility to give the treeman a little more color.

The back plate was made from an old goblin shield, which is a good spot for numbers on Big Guys. To create a more OWA look on the face and to continue the theme of the wings, I used an old shield emblem of the high elves.

Conclusion

The tree man can now be used for three different teams and therefore has its justification for existence as an individually available model. For 25 Euros, the model is still in the range of more affordable pricing, even though that it still isn't cheap. However, those who buy from third-party suppliers usually save another five Euros, and in some cases even more.

The individualization of the model is possible to a limited extent. The arms have ball heads and can be positioned differently, but it essentially stays in the "gotcha" posture. Individualization is a big thing in the Blood Bowl community, which is why I can't understand the fixed elements like the cup or the fairy - that would probably be a better solution if there were separately attachable parts. On the other hand, it's nice that the treeman comes as a plastic kit, which makes it much easier to convert with parts from your own collection.

The cast is as one is used to from Games Workshop, on a high level. The few mold lines I found also run along undercuts, which doesn't ruin the overall look of the model, even for more leisurely hobbyists. On a scale of 1 (worst score) to 10 (best score), I would therefore give the model a 7,5.

Blood Bowl is a brand by Games Workshop.
