October 2023 review

The post man was quite busy this month, as was Dino with his extensive coverage on Mortal Gods. And one of the events I managed to squeeze in this month was the SPIEL in Essen. And one of the few things, I picked up at the show, was this nice SioCast miniatures. If that name rings a bell, we've seen the machines at the Warlord Games studio. I'm looking forward to drop by their booth at Formnext on November 8th.

As I said, the post man was busy, and while I'm still working on the second Italy campaign book for Bolt Action, Tough Guts, which follows up on Soft Underbelly, and my backlog became a bit bigger (incl. the things I brought back from the BOYL trip, another Sd.Kfz. variant).

Mortal Gods – Mystical Fountain

Those who are active in the german speaking tabletop forum Tabletopwelt.de will surely remember my ordeal with this fountain, but for all those who might not be able to speak german, I would like to summarize this little adventure again.

Since I was done with my Mortal Gods army, I had the ambitious idea to create a gaming table for Mortal Gods and what do you need for that? Right - a decent amount of terrain and preferably in keeping with the theme of the game. So I bought some nice fountains at Sarissa Precision, which were available in a pack of two, and assembled the more greek style one. In September 2022 I started to customize it a little bit.

Mortal Gods – State of the Game

It's been almost four years since Mortal Gods was released by Footsore Miniatures, at the time still called War Banner. Even after all this time, the game can still be called an exotic one without a guilty conscience, offering an interesting mix of small units and heroes. Thus, it falls right into the niche between a skirmisher and a squad-based game.

If you also have a soft spot for greek mythology or simply enjoy movies and video games in this genre, you'll also be very well served by the Mythic expansion. After I started to build up some armies at the beginning of the Corona Pandemic and have already written about 30 articles about this game, I thought it would be a good opportunity to take a look at the upcoming development and to show some interesting armies from the community. And who better to do that than the great strategist Andy Hobday himself?

So it’s been four years by now and the game has slowly but steadily gained fans. What will be the next step in the evolution of Mortal Gods?

Andy: The next evolution 2nd Edition of Mortal Gods. The idea is to pull everything together into a single rulebook.

At this point, I would express the desire for mini-scenarios, such as "Capture the sheep" or a small build-up campaign, which focuses on the step by step building of an army.

Mortal Gods – Medusa

After recently looking at models from the Army of Hades and the Army of Zeus, in this review we come to probably the most elite faction in Mortal Gods Mythic, the Army of Hera, with Medusa.

The model is one of the larger models from Footsore Miniatures and is accordingly cast not in pewter, but in resin. Right at the beginning I saw one of my biggest criticisms corrected - the packaging is a solid plastic blister in which the model is protected from major damage, especially when shipped with other models.

SPIEL 2023 – Recap

After a 5-year pause, we return for the Internationale Spieltage, or how it is more commonly known as SPIEL 2023 in Essen.

And quite a few things have changed since the last time. This is the first show under the new ownership, as the Friedhelm Merz Verlag, who is the organiser of the show, was bought by the Spielwarenmesse eG, who hosts the International Toy Fair Nürnberg. This means, both events, the largest show for consumers and largest show for traders, belong to the same company.

Other things have changed as well. The ticket to the last show I visited in 2018 were 13 EUR, and now you have to pay 22 EUR for a day ticket. And I remember that in the past, you were able to park near the show, but that's off the table if you don't have access to an exhibition parking ticket. You are redirected to a park & ride parking lot, that is handled incredibly inefficient, park your car, stand in line to pay 8 EUR, get a token, that you hand back once you leave the parking lot after the show. Usually, you pay when you enter the parking lot, or when you leave it, without the additional queuing in front of a container. Never the less, the park & ride shuttle was on a good schedule, yet adding further 10-15 minutes each way to your travel.

Mortal Gods – Civilized Centaurs

Footsore Miniatures sent me one of the centaurs for Mortal Gods Mythic before and I was so excited about the model that I also requested the rest of the three civilized centaurs modeled by Trish Carden. The models, like the Zealots, come in a card-backed bag.

All centaurs come with an oval base made of MDF wood and equipment sprue, on which there is a quiver with a bow, a single quiver and two swords. The model itself consists of the horse part, the human torso and possibly an arm and a shield.

Warcry – Hunter and Hunted

This weekend WarCry receives a larger update, covering a terrain set Ravaged Lands: Scales of Talaxis, two warbands and a new supplement Hunter and Hunted. And this supplement will be covered today.

With Hunter and Hunted we move within the Gnarlwoods into a part, where we find new Seraphon relics, and two new warbands, Gorger Mawpack and Wildercorps Hunters, fight each other. Please note, this is not a stand-alone, you need either one of the starter boxes (or at least the rulebook) to be able to make use of this boxed set.

This boxed set has a RRP of 105 EURs, covers a thin campaign booklet, instructions, a  card deck, a large sprue for the terrain and two sets of a pair of medium sprues for each of the warbands.

Mortal Gods – By Zeus!

As you will remember, last year I brought my Mortal Gods troop to 300 points and mentioned that I wanted to expand the army to 500 points. The first model that was intended for this is now finally ready - the Priest of Zeus!

Mortal Gods - Priest of Zeus

In Mortal Gods Mythic, the priests of the different god factions have the function of granting the player access to mythical creatures. This is also the case here, as I intend to add a statue of Zeus, which should count as a Cyclops for rules purposes, in the army.

Mortal Gods – Zealots of Hades

If you are into Greek mythology and the typical heroic sagas of this era, you will hardly get past Footsore Miniatures' game Mortal Gods and its expansion Mythic. Accordingly, I started to build an army of Hades some time ago and now got the chance to take a look at the Zealots offered by Footsore Miniatures.

But...what is a Zealot anyway? Well, the best way to describe this term is as a kind of religious fanatic, which adds a mysterious touch to Hades' army. For the ruler of the underworld understandably had rather fewer fans in ancient Greece, and the few known places of worship were in Ionia (Asia Minor) and southern Italy, which was settled by Greeks as early as about 800 BC and became known as the area of Megale Hellas from about 340 BC.

September 2023 review

The last month started with the last mile of the Limesmarsch 2023, and we went to the RömerWelt Rheinbrohl to see the group arrive on their final milestone. Evelien and Tobias of Team Würfelkrieg / Ancient Tracks joined the project and documented a lot along their journey along the Limes.

Our kids had fun, as the Römerwelt covers a playground as well and it was interesting to see the people in roman clothing.
