Age of Sigmar Stormbringer Magazine 56 to 61
Last week the 11th shipment arrived and we only have three more until we've reached the end of the German Stormbringer Magazine by Hachette subscription. A bit weird, as it felt so far ahead and yet now so close. Anyhow, I am excited to take a deep dive into the content of the issues 56 to 61.
As usual, you can find an overview on the issues so far over here, along with the detailed unboxings of older shipments as well:
- Stormbringer issues 01 to 03
- Stormbringer issues 04 to 07
- Stormbringer issues 08 to 13
- Stormbringer issues 14 to 19
- Stormbringer issues 20 to 25
- Stormbringer issues 26 to 31
- Stormbringer issues 32 to 37
- Stormbringer issues 38 to 43
- Stormbringer issues 44 to 49
- Stormbringer issues 50 to 55
This shipment contains the printed parts in a single block, with the fold-outs as single pages and another part of the foldable gaming mat. The miniatures and paints are bagged individually, and we get another bag with the optional premium content for Radukar the Wolf.
On february 12th, Issue #56 was released, and included the former Warhammer Underworlds warband of Thundrik's Profiteers.
This set was originally released in 2019 and now fulfills a supporting role in the Kharadron Overlords segment of the Stormbringer release. The miniatures are identical to the old release, just the plastic used is regular grey and not the bronce-tinted one during the Underworlds production run. Just to be clear, these do not come with the cards for their use in Underworlds, it is just the miniatures.
Regarding the savings, it depends a bit what we take for comparison. The miniatures were available as a easy-to-build stand-alone without the cards for 20 EUR back then, but an Underworld warband is nowadays 35 EURs. Regardless, the 10,99 EUR for the magazine provide you with a proper discount.
Inside the magazine you find the usual content, with lore, assembly and painting instruction, and even the unit profiles for use with Age of Sigmar.
Last week, on februray 19th, Issue #57 was released and came with a Gloomspite Gitz Squig Herd.
Squigs are a very versatile part of the goblin armies and come in various different types, we had the Squig Hopperz in issue 48, the Sneaky Snufflers in issue 54 and as part of Zarbags Gitz.
They are a total of 12 miniatures, 10 squigs and two herders on 25mm round bases. The RRP of this set is 44 EURs, so the savings compared to the 10,99 EUR for the issue are amazing!
In addition to the necessary information about the squig herds, we get lore on the Undead and the Realms of Shyish inside the magazine.
On February 26, Issue #58 will be released, and provide us with two further citadel paints, Slaanesh Grey and Teclis Blue, both Layer paints.
As usual with the paint issues, we have negative savings. The RRP of both paints is 7,20 EUR, compared to the 10,99 EURs the magazine sets us back. And as we do not have new miniatures with this issue, we don't have any assembly instructions or rules, but receive further lore on the Age of Sigmar along with some painting techniques for smoother highlights.
In Issue #59 of March 5th, we receive more steampunk dwarves, a unit of Grundstock Thunderers.
We receive a unit of 5 Thunderers on 32mm round bases. They come with some options, as one miniature can be built as a Gunnery Sergeant Champion and optional bits, another model can be build as a Honour Bearer, carrying a standard of the Kharadron Overlords, and the regular soldiers have different weapon options as well.
Similar Squig Herd we get proper savings on these, as the regular box is 44 EUR RRP, so the magazines price provides us with a 75% discount.
Within the pages of this issue you find all the info you need to assemble the Thunderers, in addition with some tactics and a new scenario.
In march we have the issues #60 and #61 providing us with one half of the Aleguzzler Gargant each.
This is a classic kit of the Newhammer era, and proper versatile boxed set that made a lot of use of the benefits of plastic. It replaced the Orcs & Goblins metal giant, and included different bits and pieces to be a mercenary, chaos or green skin giant, with lots of different heads, arms and even foot options.
Giants are now a faction in Age of Sigmar themself, and this former quite tall model was dwarfed by the new Mega-Gargants. Still, at a RRP of 60 EURs and a combined price for the two issues of 21,98, you get a very decent discount. And did I mention you can use him in Warcry?
The issues split the instruction on building and painting across both magazines, but provide further content. For example you get a very helpful instruction on sub-builds, just like I do in my reviews, where I keep certain parts separate for easier painting until final assembly, and tactics along with a scenario for a lot of the miniatures you should have by now.
In the 11th shipment was an optional miniature. As usual you had to opt out to not receive it. After the Skaven Warlock, we get Radukar the Wolf this time, a character from the Cursed City miniature board game.
He comes in a small sprue, as he is a stand-alone character with a fixed pose (no options). The upgrade of 11 EURs is certainly cheaper than buying him directly from Games Workshop at 34 EURs.
The few pages cover the instruction and another photo backdrop, just like the Ogor Tyrant or Skaven Warlock had. In case you don't have access to these pages, there is a free introduction on Warhammer Community on the same topic - How to Photograph Models for Display.
The last issue, gives us a preview on the upcoming content of #62 and #63, where we will get another two paints and a Kharadron Overlord character, an Arkanaut Admiral.
The six issues of Age of Sigmar Stormbringer cost us 65,94 EUR (plus another 12 EUR for the premium upgrade and another 11 EUR for the optional Radukar miniature) and we got miniatures and paints with a RRP of around 175 EUR (210 EUR with the Cursed City character). The next shipment should arrive by early April and cover three characters, terrain and paints.
