October 2024 review

While it is spooky season, I enjoyed my first vacation since may, when we went to Scotland. We stayed in Germany and went for a prolonged weekend towards the south western part, Trier and the surrounding Eifel.

We went for a bit of sight seeing and lots of animals close up, at our stops at the Porta Nigra and the Wildlife Park Daun.

Unfortunately we were in the Trier, Augusta Treverorum, the oldest city in Germany on a monday, so the museums were closed and I didn't had the chance to go full on wargaming nerd. Anyhow, as a former roman settlement and city, it had a lot of public sights and we visited them. For example we went for the Amphitheatre, to capture a bit of the Gladiator feeling.

Beyond that, we visited the Basilica of Constantine, Liebfrauenkirche, the Trier Cathedral Dom, and I took some pictures as reference for black marble for an upcoming project.

Beyond that I could gather some great inspirations for my hobby project. For example I saw this magnificent historical reference on painting knights, that surely will boost my Bretonian warband, along with our trip to the Dinopark Devil's Gorge, which provided great ideas for painting Lizardmen. You simply have to take those opportunities.

And as we were already there, we went through the Devil's Gorge, the kids did a great job keeping up through the narrow passes and steep stairs. But it surely created some Lord of the Rings vibes.

While in the city of Trier, I visited a local gaming store, X-Comics, and covered my visti in a brief article of its own, along with grabbing two books for myself, an older hardcover rulebook for Age of Sigmar, along with an older Stormcast Eternals Battletome, which I'll use as a ressource for my Warcry project.

I got the 3d printer some print jobs as well during the month. For example printed up the Minotaur Starplayer and some base decoration by BruteFun for Dino, as some further bits and pieces to boost the Chaos Dwarf Blood Bowl team, and printed some base decoration for Florians Legio Tritonis, who will fight on a feudal world.

Warlord Games Germany sent me the rulebook for the 3rd edition of Bolt Action. Proper first impression, yes some mix ups, as people already pointed out that some of the descriptions don't match the pictures (a field gun claiming to be a German StuG), but otherwise neat upgrade and we will give it a closer look in a few weeks.

I am a big fan of the Star Wars Shatterpoint terrain, and another review is in the making, covering the Maintenance Bay Terrain pack. Was very excited about the preview last year at Ministravaganza. For Q1/2025 the Outer Rim Terrain Pack is planned.

And I dropped by at my local Warhammer Store as well, grabbing an addition to the spray paint handle, another base colour for a sinister paint project and two miniatures of the month.

While we're with the Citadel goodies, I managed to close some long searches as well. Torsten from CONflict Rhineland  sold me his Realm of Battle board, and I couldn't be happier. I was hoping for these to be re-released for The Old World and prices went bonkers over the last few years. A proper sturdy gaming table, and when I saw the RoB in action at Crisis, I was sure I needed to pick one up for myself.

Another set of terrain that I missed out on when it was released was the fortified manor, and the re-release was so reasonably priced, that I got myself two, along with a few of the hills. As you can never have enough basic terrain. While I wouldn't be sorry, if they re-released the Citadel Forest, that is something that I took care of with multi-bases that I can fit some model trees into, just like you see above.

Enjoy halloween. November will be another busy month, I want to prepare some items, that I will bring to Maltreffen 2024 in Lützensommern, and hopefully return with some painted up miniatures and more pictures.
