Legions Imperialis – Mechanicum Infantry

Among the sets from the Mechanium Battle Group is a whole new set of Mechanicum Infantry with quite a lot of units covered in a single kit. As of today these only available through the battle group but will be released as individual kits soon.

The RRP of the Battle Group is 125 EUR for four sets of different Mechanicum units, compared to 41 EUR RRP for a single set of two sprues with bases (25mm round in this set) and an instruction leaflet.

The Mechanicum Infantry set comes with command options, a good portion of core units and even some more elite choices, but more on that in detail below.

The sprues are properly filled and most miniatures in there a single cast. Clean up was almost not necessery, mostly there where the pieces were connected to the sprue. Some of the finer pieces, like the axes or cables of Myrmidons had white colouring from the stress upon the sprue. So you might want to be careful when you snip those from the sprue.

Each of the units were are going to build is included twice, unless stated otherwise.

The Archmagos Prime on Abeyant is quickly build and consists out of only four pieces, three of which are the mount for the HQ option. Look at that tiny Archmagos! He sits on a 25mm round base, as all units in this set do and we will cover additional use further below.

The second command unit are the Tech-Priest Auxilia, again two of them in this set. Each base is build from one tech priest, who has a retinue of Servo-Automata. This is an almost identical, shrunken down counter part of the Forge World set of the Mechanicum Magos Macrotek Enginseer.

Of the Myrmidon are six models included each sprue, four of the Destructors (two identical sets of two different poses) and two of the Secutors. As mentioned further above, take care when you snip these from the sprue, as the axes and cables were slightly bend and had pressure marks on them. I am amazed that they managed to produce these as single casts model. They have the usual signs of missing undercuts, but hidden in a clever way, that once they are put upon bases, you won't see that.

The core of this set are 10 bases of Adsecularis Tech-Thralls. And most impressively, there are ten different poses, included twice per sprue. Well made, no issues cleaning those, just file down the small socket on their feet, as that is where they were connected to the sprue.

And along the Tech-Thralls there is a huge amount of Thallax and Ursarax in this sprue. You can build a total of 12 bases (8 Thallax and 4 Ursarax) from this set, and they did a proper job about the variants. Just like they will do this in the Horus Heresy, both share the same legs, of which there are seven different sculpts, you add three different Ursarax or five different Thallax upper bodies to build the final model - which only consists out of two pieces.

From this set you can build 7 different units, and fill a total of 32 bases.

As we build quite a lot of infantry from the Mechanicum lately for Horus Heresy (Adsecularis Tech-Thralls and Thallax Cohorts), we can even provide some scale shots with the big brothers. Within the current range of Mechanicum models for Legions Imperialis, the Mechanicum infantry are the smallest models, but never the less capture a good amount of detail.

But one of the best uses beside Legions Imperialis in my opinion is that we now have proper plastic miniatures to add to the Titans as crew, for example on the railing of the Warlord Titan or on the weapon platform of the Warbringer Titan.

Conclusion

This kit is a pretty banger! 32 bases, good mix of units and models for 41 EUR RRP (or less as part of the Battle Group), is certainly something that I would be willing to add to at least another box if not two.

Mechanicum Infantry is mostly single casting, where the only thing you have to do is clean the area where the miniature is connected to the sprue, and you can quickly put them into action. I love the aspect, that we have an Aberant in there, and I am sure we will see Draykavac shortly after the release as conversion by the gamers. It would have been great, if the two additional copies of the Myrmidon Destructors had alternate poses, as they are on the same sprue, but that is nitpicking. In my opinion, considering the detail and easy to build aspect / very low amount of hassle, this probably the individual kit with the value inside the Battle Group.
