A visit to … Battlefield Berlin

During my visit to the German capital I managed to cross something off my long-time wishlist, paying a visit to Battlefield Berlin. In march, when I was in Berlin as well, I just couldn't fit in the detour, but this time I had a bit of time on my hands and was just one district over, so I grabbed the public transport and went to Kreuzberg.

I think I am customer at Battlefield since the mid 2000s, and there are a few things that make them stand-out from other stores. The major aspect certainly is the width of the ranges. You can order items from them, that you would otherwise had to import from the states or might just get your hands on at trade shows. And they didn't do that for two or three ranges, but really a lot of them, so they are pretty much a one-stop-shop, where you get almost everything beyond the big brands. Oh, and they actually have a lot of those items on stock, and don't just forward your order / organise group buys.

Beyond that, there might be of course bigger stores (in terms of shop space), but this is a pure miniature wargaming store, with a few board games, but not the "usual" fantasy store that has trading cards, comics and maybe a bit of wargaming. But let me show you the pictures.

As the store is longer than wide, the front is nothing that you see from too far away, but once you enter, you get a pretty good impression of what you're into. Large racks with Reaper Miniatures right at the entry. And not just blisters, but boxes as well, covering the classic metal range over to various variants of Reaper Bones plastic miniatures.

And of course, it is not just the miniatures themself, but a lot of hobby tools and accesories, different brands of paints, brushes and such. But obviously, a huge range of Games Workshop boxes as well, not only 40k and Age of Sigmar, but a lot of the side games. Along with a rare sight, a proper amount of Battlefield in a Box terrain sets. The availability got better once they were bought by Battlefront, but still you have to get those sets distributed from South East Asia.

A category a lot of stores don't touch, but has quite a few items in it, are second hand models. Battlefield Berlin has a few cabinets, with mostly Games Workshop miniatures, and even some loose sprues, you can browse through.

But not everything in the display cases is for sale, some items are player armies and you could see a lot of miniatures from the Horus Heresy, along with some rarely seen fantasy ranges.

And in the same display cases on eye-level was some proper eye-candy, with busts, showcase miniatures and large scale sculpts. That is no surprise, Berlin has a strong miniature painter community, with people like Ben Komets, and even hosted some of the events back in the day from Painting Buddha.

While you move further to the back, you'll see more and more ranges on display from manufacturers from all over the world, the more known ones like Mantic Games or Warlord Games of course, along with lots of them, that are more niché like Archon Studios, Tabletop Art and a few meters of shelves with basic hobby items from Renedra.

Of course, I couldn't leave empty handed, and grabbed a few items from Reaper, that were on my wish-list. I told myself that I shouldn't spend to much money, as I was in Berlin by plane and as such limited by my luggage - but (!) if that is the case with you, you can grab a basket, put in what ever you fancy and they will happily sent it home to you, with free shipping inside of Germany over 50 EURs and a flat fee of 12,90 EUR for most european countries.

I really enjoyed my visit, as it is rarely the case that I can actually browse the assortment as a gaming store, as most cover the items that I can pretty much buy everywhere. Highly recommended to stop by if you're in town and have some time. It is roughly 25 minutes from the central station using public transport. Parking nearby should be possible.

You can find their online store and opening hours on their website Battlefield Berlin.
