Legions Imperialis – Legiones Astartes Termite Assault Drills

And the third kit in this wave is are Termite Assault Drills, a unit for the Legiones Astartes.

The Termite Assault drills are an underground transport vehicle, often used in sieges or during similar heavily fortified scenarios. It is classified as an Imperial Subterrain Vehicle, and not the only one of its kind. Back in the Rogue Traders days, some armies had access to the Mole (used by the Imperial Guard/Astra Militarum and Squats) or Hellbore (Mechanicum and Squats), with variants like the Hades Breaching Drill.

There is a full scale model of the assault drills, but due to it being a resin kit and priced above 100 GBP, it is a rather rare sight. The model has been around in epic scale for a while in older iterations of the game, like Epic or Space Marine, and now we have a plastic kit of the newer design. You can find the rules for this formation in the latest supplement for Legions Imperialis, The Devastation of Tallarn.

The boxed set for the Termite Assault Drill covers a total of 8 models spread across two sprues, a black-and-white instruction leaflet and a decal sheet. All this for the RRP of 41 / 31,50 GBP.

We have a organised sprue, covering the bits needed along with some few options for the vehicle itself. Minor mould lines that are fairly easy to clean.

As this is a Legiones Astartes vehicle, we get the much larger decal sheet for Legions Imperialis, with a total of 1,130 decals. This sheet covers all 18 legions legions, with black or white (in some cases both) insignia, and a proper amount of numerals and honour markings. While the choice of black and white prints work with some legoins, others would benefit from more colours.

Round shapes can be tricky in plastic, but the core shell of the termite is build from from five pieces. Three identical plates and two variants, covering an open hatch for the weapons to pop out. You build a half shell and add the two variants to them, and in the nex step add the drill tip and exhausts to the front and back of this shell.

And we are almost done with the model at that point. As we have an underground vehicle, there are no regular hatches or commander options, but we have two hatches than can be opened to insert the bolters. That's it, a very quick and rather easy build.

We cover an updated scale comparison in this review, with the new sizes of the Termite and Sabre tank to the range of Legiones Astartes vehicles.

Conclusion

This is another set of 8 models for 41,50 EURs. And it is fairly reasonable, but to some degree I think a bit of an easter egg or "bonus model" of a breaching or diving model would have been great and could have been added to the sprue in my opinion. Beyond that, you could easily stretch the amount of termites from this kit by sawing two in half and making it 10 instead of 8 - creating even more value from this. Maybe this is something that I will tackle along with the conversion of the Leman Russ kits.

Beyond this, the amount of detail is satisfying and the Termiate Assault Drill is a surprisingly quick build with a very well fit, without bigger hassle (some of the sprue connection areas are angled, so you need to keep that in mind, to not damage the actual piece). Interesting addition to the range, I can see these being used as mission markers or base decoration as well, as it adds another layer to the game in addition to regular surface and air battle.

The Termite Assault Drill is a transport option for Legiones Astartes and there is even a special formation for a proper underground assault formation, using rules similar to the deep strike of Terminators.
