Warmaster – Dukedom of Gisoreux Pt 3
With all the talk about the Old World, I feel the need to pick up my old-world themed Warmaster project of the Bretonnian Dukedom of Gisoreux.
The 10 plates were printed and cured in the mean time, costing me less than litre of resin and about a week of printing (the printing time will be less for people who use larger printers and/or newer once, with faster printing time). This would be 23 units, 10 heroes and two artillery pieces, so quite the stunning 3,000 points army.
I looked up some older ressources on Warmaster, for example May 2020 UK White Dwarf #245 covered tutorials for terrain building and painting miniatures.
While regular Warmaster units are placed on 40 by 20 mm bases, that I sourced by Renedra, I wanted to go for the characters for round bases. As I wanted to make them pop a bit more, I went with 30mm round for the regular heroes, and a larger 40mm round base for my Bretonnian Lord on Hippogryph (counts rulewise as a Pegasus). As the regular character codes for Warmaster narrate little stories, recreate scenes, I wanted to do something similar with mine. And as the ForestDragon STLs come with individual stands as well, I used the Command options for the Knights as further hero options, like a lesser battle standard bearer or something similar.
I really like the poses the heroes have, and am looking forward to paint some fancy coat of arms to them. Already digged out the old White Dwarf issues for further inspiration.
For the bases themself, I want to add a bit of variation, to not only have the two strips on them, but as mentioned above have little stories told with the units. For example I got some stakesand scaled them down so they fit the size, and I think this really looks great with the archers. And as some of the Forest Dragon files even come without bases, you can convert them even further have them open a rank for a Knight to ride through.
The old artwork from the army book is so amazing and even with the army being located in Gisoreux, the Knights of the Realm will have a lot of different coat of arms and colours. But to make space for the stag head of the dukedom, I printed the command strips again with the blank banners. Beyond that I am really looking foward to all these colours.
I know that Bretonians don't use mercenaries, but I wanted to have a bit of variety in this army and replaced on of the squire units with models from MiniRats Dogs of War, the Arabian Light Cavalry Regiment. With Suliman le Saracen as a character from the old Bretonian army book, I felt that this would be a nice addition, along with a unit that could be his bodyguard. No rules advantage, just a different set of STLs used, and it adds a 13th warrior touch as well. And I found out, that Tristan le Troubadour was actually from Gisoreux, so I had to include him. I used the musician from the Elite Knights and added a pilgrim pose along with a smaller printed knight, whose horses head I'll repurpose, to convert Jules le Jongleur.
The trebuchets are quite massive and fill the 40 by 60mm bases easily, so that I'll have troubles to place the crew. Maybe I need to go for smaller trebuchets. We will see.
It probably won't be that important, as most of the horses have barding, so you won't see that much of them, but I looked up the various horse colours as well, as some like the mounts for the squires and Arabian auxilia will make use of this.
And while my excitement for the Bretonnians is pretty high, I am still not that sold about the Lizardmen. I like the overall idea, but the miniatures (better said STLs) don't have the old warhammer-y flair to them. But until I have a proper alternative in mind, I'll keep this setup. Maybe print some heroes or single strips of other armies and see if that appealls to me in a stronger way.
