Legions Imperialis – Civitas Imperialis

Terrain worth fighting over. This is something Games Workshop has provided with the Civitas Imperialis range already for Adeptus Titanicus and they are picking this up again for Legions Imperialis. I did reviews on these back in the day, the sprues are back and they have a lot of option.

The idea of this article is to give you an overview, what they contain as they are very similar named and a deal on the first sight, might not be that much of bargain once you had time to compare.

The base set was the regular Civitas Imperialis in 2018. It came with four sprues, two of the large ones and two of the medium and it established an almost "lego-like" system of tiles, that you could combine in various ways to build buildings and ruins. And with the initial need to provide a blocker for line of sight for titans, we want tall. The RRP of these boxes was 32,50 when they were released, later 40 EUR. Keep that in mind, when you buy second hand. You can look into the content and concept of the sprues in the review, or scroll down a bit for a brief summary.

Of these sprues, covering wall tiles, partially covering doors as well, one or two wide in three different sizes. Small, medium and tall. They could be stacked and glued in 90° or 180° angles. This was the core, all other sets added to.

In 2019 there were roof toppers released for the Civitas range, the Civitas Imperialis Spires. Very gothic spires and towers, giving you the possibily to build cathedrals and other buildings of the Imperium. They were released for a bit less than the base kit, at 25 EUR RRP and were raised later. And of course, we did a review on them.

There were two identical sprues in there, and could get quite the yield from that set. Due to their hexagonal and octagonal shape, they broke the boxy look of the core set.

And now with the release of Legions Imperialis, Games Workshop adds a third set to the lot, the Civitas Imperialis Ruins. The set is priced at 60 EURs and picks up the design we know from the other sets, along with smaller items from the Manufactorum Imperialis.

In that box, you will find a total of 4 sprues. Two times the ruins and two times the ruined wall tiles.

How does the Civitas Imperialis terrain work? The wall tiles come in three heights, low, medium and high and 29 mm wide. Some tiles are double wide for faster building. Due to this technique, you can build various buildings and use the bits mixed from various kits of the range. Why 29mm? This gives you the chance to place 25mm round bases on top. What a coincidence!

The sprues were available in various larger boxed set. The Civitas Imperialis Sector was terrain set that covered 16 sprues of each, the combination of 4 of the smaller sets.

And with the release of the spires, there was an updated sector box, Civitas Imperialis Administratum Sector, adding two of the spire sprues (a single box of the Civitas Imperialis Spires) to the lot. The only difference between the two sector boxes is the addition of the Spires. Beyond that, the Legions Imperialis kit is just a repack with a different packaging, as there are no  Legions specific items (like bases) to this set, you can grab the Adeptus Titanicus one as well, if you find it.

Online these can be difficult to get, but if you get a discount, they are quite the bargain. Sometimes you can be lucky in find one of these in a FLGS, somewhere in the shelves and just as an overview, what's in there (and what is not) you can look up the content and the reviews above.

And there is another set, the Manufactorum Imperialis, adding a lot of industrial building pieces in this scale. While it was more decor in Titanicus, due to not providing higher buildings, blocking the line of sight, these should be more interesting for Legions Imperialis as they are on eye-level for most units.

Similar to the other sets, these boxes cover two different sprues, of which two of each are included.

We did quite the building with these sprues in the past, and I never came around to cover the additional builds that I did, but I'll catch up, especially in combination with the new terrain rules for Legions Imperialis (those will be covered in an additional article, introducing the terrain and how you should plan your terrain builds for this game).

But we didn't stop there, we went big and prepared a proper eyecatcher for our tables.

I'll provide build reports / tutorials on our builds, along with a match of the new rules in the next weeks. Stay tuned!

  1. Loving your epic scale articles, what’s the footprint like with the ruins set?

  2. We will go into that in the next articles. 5 by 4′ is the recommended size of the table, and I would size the most terrain pieces not bigger than 3 by 3″
