Legions Imperialis – Legiones Astartes Kratos Heavy Tank Squadron

The Heavy armour for the Legiones Astartes is here, with the Kratos Heavy Tank.

The Kratos is a new type of vehicle for the Horus Heresy, that was introduced in full scale as a plastic kit in 2022 for the release of the 2nd edition. It is bigger than the Sicaran, whose resin kit was replaced by a plastic kit as well last year. And now you can have both them, again in plastic, for Legions Imperialis.

While the Sicaran is currently exclusive to the core set, you can get the Kratos Heavy Tank Squadron of four, as part of the first wave for the game at a RRP of 40 EUR / 30 GBP.

As the other kits, it comes with two identical sprues, a large vehicle decal sheet and a black-and-white instruction leaflet.

The sprue is filled and leaves no unused space. You have a few weapon options, either a turret-mounted Kratos battlecannon or melta blastgun, hull-mounted autocannons, heavy bolters or lascannons, and sponson-mounted heavy bolters or lascannons, as well as optional dozer blades, along with a gunner, spotter, or closed hatch atop the hull.

Casting is well done, only minor mould lines. The decal sheet covers all 18 legions, but unfortunately not in colour, just black and white. This might not be an issue for Iron Hands, Raven Guard or Imperial Fists, but others like the World Eaters or Word Bearers surely wouldn't mind some colour.

Let's start building the Kratos tanks. It is pretty cool, that they managed to include some posable weapons in this scale. The hull mounted autocannons, heavy bolters or lascannons can be pointed within their arc of view.

The amount of detail they captured here is once again pretty impressive. I build half of the squadron with Dozerblades. These are quite massive on the full scale tank and surely mean business in epic scale as well.

For the turrets you have to decide what you want to build, as there are no second turrets for the other weapon variant as they are for example with the Predator. The sponsons are a bit fragile, so you might want to take your time building them. And last but not least, the various options for the crew.

Here are two build Kratos tanks with different options for weaponry and equipment.

This is currently the largest / heaviest tank among the Legiones Astartes and will be outranked once the Spartans are released, which we already have seen on Warhammer Community as a teaser.

Quite the presence the Kratos creates on the battle field.

Conclusion
Well, it is not a bargain, but certainly a better deal than the Sicaran. Both come with 4 vehicles per boxed set, but due to its higher classification and overall bigger model it is the better deal from my point of view. RRP is at 10 EUR per model, but you should be able to drop that via FLGS to 9 or 8.

If you want to build a viable army list from the Core Set, I suggest that you get the Kratos among your first buys, as this enables you to play an armoured company. The Infantry from the Core Set can be used as a Demi Company, but for the Armoured Company you only have two Battle Tank choices with the Sicaran and Predator, missing one Heavy Armour, for which there are currentl yon the Kratos to play that role. At 260 points for the content of this box, you are - along with the content of the core set almost at 1.000 points and within reach of enough base points to actually play the strategic asset of the Warhound legally.

The Kratos can be used in a unit between 2 and 6 tanks, which means you can split this box for two squadron in case you want to go for numbers and more flexibility.
