Warhammer 40,000 – Leviathan Primaris Sternguard and Characters

Let's finish the Space Marine part of the Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan boxed set. We showed you the Terminators, we covered the Ballistus Dreadnought and today it is about the Primaris Space Marines with Tacticus and Phobos Armour.

Two more characters, an Apothecary Biologis and Lieutenant in Phobos Armour, as well as a new Sternguard Veteran Squad and Infernus Squad.

The Infernus Squad are regular Primaris Space Marines, all armoured with Flamers. They have two identical medium-sized sprues of 5 miniatures each and build as is, with a variant for the Sergeant. We're not going to focus on them in this article.

The Sternguard and characters are combined in a large sprue, with all the bits you need.

Casting is crisp on both of them, the sprue is filled to the brim. So, let's grab the appropriate bases and get started.

The first model we're going to build is the Sternguard Veteran Squad Sergeant, he has a bolt pistol and combi-weapon (melta + bolter).

And the heavy weapon guy, carries a Sternguard Heavy Bolter. The back pack is designed a bit differently, including a power belt.

The regular Sternguard Veterans wear two Sternguard Boltrifles and another combi-weapon (plasma + bolter).

Assembly is quick and a good fit. They look proper with their tabards and have left shoulder pads with widened rim. With their decorated armour it puts them in the middle between regular Primaris and the Bladeguard.

There are two further characters not wearing Terminator armour in this set, a Primaris Apothecary Biologis, a new class of Apothcary, who can be attached to other units than the regular one (in this case Aggressor Squad, Eradicator Squad and Heavy Intercessor Squad). Very dynamic pose, with the tools on his backpacks and the container in his left hand.

The only model picking up the Tyrannic War veteran style among the Space Marines is the Lieutenant in Phobos Armour, with a trophy on his shoulder pad and a proper hunting blade. Stunning looking character, would have loved a whole squad in this style or at least a small sprue with some bits to convert the marines to this look.

The improvement of the Sternguard is impressive. They benefit a lot from the Rubicon Primaris treatment. Not only them being taller, but much better proportioned, it really underlines the stern part of their name.

And for comparison, the Phobos armour, which translates to the Primaris Scouts have come a long way as well. And for the sake of completion, the LE2 Space Marine, the old Sternguard and the new Primaris Sternguard Veterans. There were Ultramarine Veterans, Tyrannic War Veterans and a Venerable Dreadnought offered by Forge World.

Conclusion

A proper detachment / battle force that you get with Warhammer 40,000 Leviathan, a good mixture of miniatures - even though I could have lived without the Infernus Squad. The design is amazing overall and what is included as push-fits / starter miniatures is so well developed, that it really comes close to the multi-part kits.

All three units that we've covered are well done, had no issues with the assembly. You wouldn't even need glue, simply cleaning them up and pushing them together - as intended - works very well and the comfort of this technique has improved, if you take for the example the Warhammer Underworlds range as a baseline.

I have mentioned it above and in the other articles on the boxed set. I get why they kept the miniatures generic, so you can use them with all of the Space Marine chapters there are, including your home brews. Yet, a bit more Tyrannic War themed would have been amazing. Maybe added a sprue with some swap parts (heads, shoulder pads etc.) with trophies etc., Games Workshop covered amazing Tyrannic War veterans in the past - and that would have been a great chance to pick that theme up again.

But beyond that - as this is not a starter set, but a launch set, aiming at already players - this still makes a great addition to your collection. For example, if you already have 9th edition Indomitus starter set or one of the strike forces, and want an update along with some new miniatures.
