Dark Conspiracy – The Battle for Antoch Plains
We talked about Warmaster earlier this week, and one of the settings that really spoke to me, was the conflict of Lizardmen vs Bretonnians from the 5th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles starter set. It would be something different than the End Times or Storm of Chaos, and for that reason I want to give you an overview.
To validate my ideas of those armies, I grabbed the two army books and gave them a proper browse, if there is something that either would increase my interest or pop up some red flag for it. So far, only a strong breath of nostalgia leading me further down the rabbit hole.
And to support the release, there were campaigns that were played in the stores all over the world and partially in clubs or at home. And those had some interesting backstories, which are going to be the core of this project.
Warmaster – Not for THE, just Warmaster
With the teaser for an epic, small scale system coming to the Horus Heresy, I put my own epic 30k project on hold until we know more. Especially as I like get a feel for what's coming, base sizes etc., I will pick up another system from my backlog and move it forward in the schedule - Warmaster.
Why Warmaster?
I simply don't have the ressources in terms of available time and space to cover one of these amazing 4-6.000 point lists from Warhammer. I don't see myself painting 200 state troops in 28mm and having barely a chance to put them to use, nor store them properly as I can use that room for multiple other projects. And with the possibilities of a 3d printer and the availability of different whole armies as STLs and printing at home, this is a very valid and approachable project. Especially as going for the original miniatures is not really an option. First of all, they are quite scarce and in the rare times they are available 2nd hand, the prices are through the roof. And as they are post-Middlehammer era, I don't really have a connection to that miniature range, so there are no nostalgic feelings or motivation, to go for the classic range.
Bolt Action – SdKfz 250/1 250/3 and 250/10 variants Ausf. A
The German motor pool receives another addition. Warlord Games picks up the Sd.Kfz. 250 "Alte" again, and adds further variants for the Ausführung A.
The Sd.Kfz 250/1 is the leichter Schützenpanzerwagen, the standard troop carrier. Build straight from the sprues, no additional parts or conversion needed. There is already a multi-option box available, giving you access to the /9 leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (2 cm), a Reconnaissance variant with a 2 cm KwK 38 autocannon and a small turret, identical with the one of the Sd.Kfz. 222 armoured cars, and the /11 leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (schwere Panzerbüchse 41), with a heavy anti-tank rifle and an MG 34. This new set, covers two additional sprues, adding the /3 leichter Funkpanzerwagen, command variant, equipped with radio equipment and /10 leichter Schützenpanzerwagen (3.7 cm PaK), another reconnaissance variant with the 3.7 cm PaK 35/36, variants.
Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team – Ashes of Faith Supplement
It's been a while, since the last that the we covered a supplement for Kill Team on here. Back in 2018 we covered the semi-stand-alone boxed set of Rogue Trader, which was introduced earlier that year at Warhammer Fest Europe. And it is pretty similar with Warhammer 40,000 Kill Team - Ashes of Faith, a narrative supplement for Kill Team, which was introduced on Warhammer Fest a few weeks ago as well.
Unlike other Kill Team boxed sets, this one comes without terrain, but with a narrative campaign, which provides a bit of development for the teams. The two factions covered in this set are the Inquisition, with a retinue of Inquisitorial Agents and Ancillary support units (Scions and Sisters of Silence) and a cult of Chaos. Quite the stack of miniatures, but more on that later. You are welcomed by a lot of plastic once you open up the box. Beneath that, you'll find a divider with the Warhammer logo, protecting the remaining game materials (which we will show you in detail further below) from the sprues.
Bolt Action – Italian Bersaglieri
Warlord Games produced various kits to support the release of the two Italian campaign books for Bolt Action. We've covered Soft Underbelly on this blog already - and now the second plastic kit introducing the Italian Bersaglieri, to give you more options in addition to the regular Soldiers and Blackshirts.
The Bersaglieri were a troop of marksmen (the name translates into sharpshooters) and they served the Royal Italian Army. The units can be recognized by their black feathers on their helmets, which are not only worn with their dress uniform but combat helmets as well. The Bersaglieri fought in the Italian invasion of France and in the Greco-Italian War, later Bersaglieri regiments were deployed on the Eastern Front. One battalion of Bersaglieri participated in the East African Campaign. Six Bersaglieri regiments served and were destroyed during the North African Campaign. This means that the content of this box, similar to the Soldiers and Blackshirts plastic kit, is primarily for early and mid-war forces.
April 2023 review
One Third of 2023 is already behind us and I'm looking forward to the next gaming events.
I managed to combine one of my business trips with a visit to a gaming club and had a good time at Fantasy-Spiele Würzburg e.V., you can read up on my visit here.
The event schedule is updated, and I'm trying to make my visit to BOYL happen this year!
Warhammer Fest 2023 Recap and Comments – Part 3
And the third and final part of our Warhammer Fest 2023 recap and comments, focussing on the Monday reveals. With them being only labelled as Kill Team and the rather "light" content of the Fantasy skirmishes from Saturday, I didn't expect that much. But was happily surprised.
There will be a narrative campaign for Kill Team called Ashes of Faith. It is not part of the current season Gallowdark, but an extension of its own, I assume a bit like Rogue Trader back in 2018. It covers no terrain, and a repack of the chaos cultists sets from the 40k Chaos range (Dark Commune, Cultists and Accursed Cultists), as well as a few Sisters of Silence and Scions to support the new Inquisitorial Agents, who are a new plastic kit, that will give you the option to build 7 different miniatures (a few variants shown here).
These are a nod to the Inquisitor 54mm miniature roleplaying game by Games Workshop in the 2000s, among them most noticeably Sergeant Stone, who had his 54mm miniature and even a rumour engine teaser a while back on Warhammer Community. The new model really catches the artwork by John Blanche and Adrian Smith.
Warhammer Fest 2023 Recap and Comments – Part 2
Picking up after day one of Warhammer Fest 2023, Games Workshop started with Age of Sigmar, we actually received a three part reveal.
The first one, covering a well-deserved update on the Imperial Knights, now known as Cities of Sigmar Freeguild Cavaliers. Quite the tall horses and stunning barding on these. I like the different armour pieces and variants for the helmets. The old kit is 25 years old and did some heavy lifting back in the day, but it is time to send them into their well-deserved retirement. It will be interesting to see if the Demigryph cavalry will be phased out as well, as they don't really fit with the scale and who would ride demigryphs if you can have these horses? Impressive kit and I can imagine an impressive kitbash potential for Astra Militarum rough riders as well.
Warhammer Fest 2023 Recap and Comments – Part 1
This prolonged weekend (April 29th to May 1st 2023) was the Warhammer Fest 2023 hosted by Games Workshop in Manchester. This is the annual big Warhammer party, currently only held in the UK, but all the reveals and a lot of coverage can be found as well directly published by Games Workshop on their twitch or Warhammer Community page.
The last time we had a Warhammer Fest in Central Europe was in 2018, when it was hosted in Düsseldorf, Germany. We were there and covered the event on this blog.
