White Dwarf Trio – August til October 2021
Catching up with the last three issues of White Dwarf, #467 August, #468 September and #469 October 2021. I do have an subscription, but due to the move and some hickups with the post, I got replacements for 467 and 468 in form of the regular copies.
In the August issue, #467, the overall focus was heavy on the new edition of Age of Sigmar, covering Kruleboyz and updated Stormcasts. However, the issue has some interesting conversions, that I like to point out. First of all, this impressive combination of the Mega-Gargant and the Canis Rex Knight Preceptor. A very fitting use of the shield and helmet, to make a huge Bretonnian Knight.
With the Four Generals article series, we have a broad selection of conversions on many armies. But the use of these Necromunda Cawdor miniatures, beyond the often re-purposed Mordheim / Retro-Hammer look, for Age of Sigmar as Dark Elves is really great.
And the last page, gives you an interesting idea of using the 40k terrain of the Sector Mechanicum Alchomite Stack for Adeptus Titanicus. Could use some more minor details to really create the inclusion of the scale, but never the less, creative combination.
Issue 468 was one that I really was eager to get my hands on, especially because of the decal sheet. I intend to go for a retro-Space Wolves paint job on one of my AT knight houses and the wolf inspired decals will be exotic enough to not just simply be Space Wolves iconography.
The issue starts with an amazing Blanche-style Nurgle warband, that is really retro and making use of many plastic kits. The Wolfspear is introduced to the lore, with its own Index Astartes Article. They are made entirely from Primaris marines.
This issue comes with a lot of "freebies", among it a card board insert for Kill Team.
And again, some impressive paint jobs and conversion. Even an official instruction to recreate the Orc-Genestealer Hybrid we had in the past. The alternate paint job, for the otherwise often so shiny Stormcasts is really working, as is this grim-dark paint job on the Arkanaut Frigate.
The October issue, 469, opens with an impressive conversion of a Black Templar Land Raider, making it a moving temple. Pretty cool kitbash, using parts of the Vindicator, old Sector Imperialis terrain along with the Terminator from the Space Hulk boardgame. A few pages further, a great conversion of another Mega-Gargant. Really like the empty cowl. This conversion is easier than it might look like, as the bits for the cowl are seperate and can be build this way, without much needed alteration.
I have already seen some Slaaneshi models, based upon the Idoneth Deepkin. From Eidolon as a chaos demon / champion (or even vampire count) to this use of the Akhelian King as a chaos champion. And some lore on the old power armour, always appreciated. Maybe we will see some further Horus Heresy towards the end of the year.
A very welcoming goodie this month is the cardboard insert, with two different backdrops for taking pictures of your miniatures. Actually something I'd love to see more often with different designs. I am a frequent user of backdrops for reviews and scenic pictures, so that's a great addition.
As a Warhammer+ subscriber, I have access to the back issues until - currently - 2017, with the vault expanding around 4 issues per week. With that tempo I need to stay subbed for around 3 years until we reach the golden era.
