CONflict Rhineland 2019
Today and tomorrow the CONflict Rheinland (Rhineland) will be held in Langenfeld near Leverkusen, between Cologne and Dusseldorf. As such it was a short and straight trip for me, 5 minutes to the Autobahn, 1 hour on it (just the A3, no changes...) and roughly 5 minutes to get from the exit to the venue.
The venue is the marksmen's club house St. Sebastianus Reusrath. Tickets are 5 EUR for a single day ticket and 8 EUR for both. Parking is free and available plenty right in front of the venue. As a club house, it has a bar counter, where drinks and snacks are available and as a marksmen's club house, it has a small shooting range, that was repurposed as an additional gaming area.
There were multiple traders, among them Shifting Lands by GeBoom, offering his broad range of foam cutting tools. The "usual" suspects were there as well, like Heer46, Stoessi and even Brother Vinni. About the later I'm a bit surprised, as he's from St. Petersburg in Russia and that is quite a ride to Germany and with the frequency of shows that I saw him, among others at Tactica and Ad Arma this year.
Another trader at the show is Drachental Düsseldorf, I've seen their offering of 3d printed terrain on Instagram and Facebook and was eager to see it in person. I have to say, I'm impressed by the quality and sturdiness. The price are absolutely appropiated.
In the shooting range was the Spielkunst e.V. with an Infinity and Trafalgar table, as well as Ad Arma with Men of Bronze.
Then there was a 15mm scale diorama of The Battle of Shiloh, from the American Civil War.
Wraith's Crypt / Pils & Pinsel introduced Tribal Primeval, with Neanderthal man and Cro-Magnon fighting each other.
The THS covered "Somewhere in Tennesse - The Attack on Fort Henry" using the Black Powder rules with the supplement Glory Hallelujah!.
You had the chance to see Peter Dennis' Paperboys English Civil War in action presented by the Dortmund Amateur Wargamer.
And on of my favourites, Hot Extraction using the recently released 2nd edition of Spectre Operations, hosted by Wardogs Hannover and the CONflict Rheinland team. It uses 20mm / 1:72 scale miniatures and I think I have to go into detail on this scale and setting in a separate article.
Two Warhammer 40.000 tables, among them Die Eisfelder von Nostalgika, a 2. Edition Warhammer table. The later focussed more on using the Oldhammer rules, as the miniatures came from more recent releases.
Frank Bauer hosted a scenario from the first Punic War using DBA rules in 28mm.
The best placing of all the tables got Martin from the Tabletop Club Rhein Main. Right outside the venue under a pavilion, with his Freeing the Frankfurter bakers from Windecken table, using his favourite rule set, Lion Rampant with Perry Miniatures.
Pink Unicorn was there as well, with a 15mm Poor Bloody Infantry table in the Philippines 1945.
The show is a compact, gaming orientated convention. With it being north of Cologne and in North Rhine Westphalia, you do not only see a lot of people from the german wargaming hotspot Ruhr area (Games Workshop had their german HQ in Duesseldorf and an incredible high density of stores around that area) but from the Netherlands and Belgium as well. This creates a bit of nostalgic feeling, similar to the Action in Rheindahlen, one of the largest wargaming events back in the day in Western Germany.
A small bring & buy would be a nice addition, but certainly be a space problem, as the tables are already quite close to eachother. If they want to grow further, they probably have to switch to a different location. This show is the second last event for my this summer, I'll visit Tabletopia and then take a break until Crisis in Antwerp, as you get a bit full by the repetition of the tables. Other than that, I want to focus on my backlog and reducing and reorganisating the pile of miniatures over here.
If you're from the area, or willing to drive there, tomorrow the show continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
