More from the Balearic Island of Mallorca

On friday, March 30th, our exploring journey of the island continued. We set for the southern part and made several stops along the coast, beginning with Cala Figuera. We had great luck with the weather, it was bright and sunny, and just look at these blues of sky and sea.

The second row shows the weathered stone ground along the coast line. With the smaller puddles it looks so outlandish, I thought this could be an interesting idea for an alien planet, using lava stones and such to recreate the surface. As a basing design for sci-fi settings like Gates of Antares or maybe a Necron or Mechanicus army project.

After Figuera, we stopped at Cala Llombards. A nice little beach, with a flat slope toward the water. As Mallorca was fought over during the Spanish Civil War, this could be an interesting idea for a landing scenario, with a Republican landing force against the Nationalist defenders. Such landings were part of the Battle of Mallorca, but happened on other parts of the coasts.

More likely would a landing be near the Cap de Ses Salines, as this part of the coast is broader and you can even see the small island of Cabrera from there, it was an actual part of the Battle of Mallorca and could be an interesting idea on how the coasts might have looked like on the east coast during the Conquest of Mallorca during the Crusades.

In inland of south Mallorca looks like this. Classic mediterranean features, many similar sights as you would see them in Italy or Greece, during Unternehmen Merkur / the Battle of Crete, or the later Operation Husky, allied invasion of Italy.

The stone walls could be achieved with the Rooke's Drift stone wall set, painted in sand tones, or using this tutorial for self made stone walls by the Crooked Staff.

The last day of our vacation, April 1st, started with a bad april fools prank, as somebody stole our front number plate. But we were lucky, as it was just the front plate, that was stolen, not both, what would have rendered us rather immobile.

We went on the scenic drive, along the northern mountain highway, beginning with Soller, with its lovely old town, the train and Sant Bartomeu.

From there we went further west towards Andratx along the curvy roads, with the usual mixture of bicycles and cars.

Mallorca was an interesting vacation for us, the weather was a welcome change to the rather cold climate of the last weeks and months in Germany. It feld great to fuel up on sunshine and warmth. A week was fine for me, with the tours to the different sights and location over the island. I was surprised that it was rather cheap, especially if you keep in mind that this is an island and it is rather strong on the touristic side. The landmarks are quite beautiful, but not very unique, so if you're familiar with the mediterranean there is not much new to see, maybe just closer to eachother. Mallorca is more for a laid back vacation, I was missing some cultural stops like museums and due to easter unfortunatelly some of the buildings like the cathedral in Palma were closed.

Never the less, it was interesting for me to be in Spain again, and I'm looking forward for another trip to the iberian peninsular in the near future, combinding Portugal and Spain the next time, with some sights from the Crusades and Punic Wars, museums and landmarks.
