Mustering Vulfgangs Warband
After mustering the Romans for the SAGA project, it is time to call the German warriors of Vulfgangs warband to arms.
As mentioned in the article about planing a german warband, I started assembling the plastic and metal miniatures from the matching Warlord Games boxed set. As the metal torsos all wore fur, I added those fur cloaks to all of the miniatures. Fur is quite easy to do and there are several ways to do so, among others using a press mold by Micro Art Studios. I used a sculptor tool with a sharp, pin like tip.
I went with two units of 12 each, both lead by a command group of metal miniatures, one is part of the germanic warrior box, the other is sold as a separate blister.
And with yesterdays review on the Frostgrave Barbarians, I had the perfect base for my mighty hearthguard, the loyal elite around Vulfgang. I went with 3 points of hearthguard, so 3 units of 4, that could be field as two units of 6 as well.
As I am not yet set with which list I'm going to field them, I went with a small assortment of weapons. One group will be using hand weapons, the other one two-handed weapons and the third will be used as a command group. As the Barbarians are a fantasy set, the weapons are overdrawn. I took the liberty of reducing the weapon size by cutting them down or replacing them with bits from other historical sets, like Warlord Games or Gripping Beast.
You can see what I mean about the weapons in the first picture. As I needed a battle standard bearer and a stretched out matching arm, I went with the bow arm as a base, drilled it open and added one of the insignias from the celtic command sprue.
Just added the weapons to the bodies, already fierce warriors. I thought about adding a bit of cloth to the battle standard, but decided to use some fur tails and heads of their enemies, as this is still close to what I found in some osprey books on german tribe "command".
As with the heads, I used a mixture of celtic heads and barbarian heads, but reduced / modified the wild beards a bit. The non-germanic helmets would be trophies of proven warriors, and I gave the battle standard bearer a few more knots to his beard, to make him look more impressive.
Last model to be build is Vulfgang himself, based on the Ariovistus miniature by Warlord Games. The 40mm base is a bit crowded, but the wolfhounds are great companions in my opinion. Unsure how to base him or if he'll stay on a rather flat base, as like mentioned before, there is not much room for anything else.
The next step on these is preparing the bases and getting them primed. While waiting for the remaining celt-iberians to arrive, to finish the basic steps on them as well. Oh and I managed to finish the Roman test miniature, but more on that later.
